Redstone lies within the Pinto Valley Wilderness Area.
This wilderness area (over 39,000 acres) protects towering cliffs, narrow canyons, red sandstone outcroppings and historic lava flows.
The sandstone outcroppings of Redstone (and those seen throughout Pinto Valley) are ancient sand dunes that solidified into rock.
Erosion has exposed these "ancient dunes" and today methodically erodes them into fantastic shapes with small caves, rock windows, arches and at least one baby elephant (see photo above - map below: visible from parking lot).
Redstone is great place to explore the geology and desert vegetation of Lake Mead National Recreation Area without the need to navigate dirt roads or hike back-country trails.
The picnic area has shaded tables (ADA accessible) nestled among the rock outcrops and restrooms (adjacent to the parking area).
Along the short concrete walkway to the picnic area are informational signs describing the areas geology and the Redstone Dune Trail.
This half-mile trail (an easy 30 minute walk - not ADA accessible) loops around a large "stone sand dune" while passing through a beautiful section of the Mojave Desert.
In addition to the loop trail, many usage trails navigate the area allowing exploration of various nearby rock outcrops.
So choose your own path and discover whats "around the next corner".
